Returning Thompson And In-Form Barry Pleases Williams
Swindon Town caretaker manager Luke Williams has been boosted by his increase in options, following the successful comeback of captain Nathan Thompson, following a lengthy lay-off.
Thompson's return coincides with a run of impressive performances from defender Bradley Barry, who has been filling in the right back berth in the absence of the Robins' captain.
Barry, a free transfer signing in the summer, has caught the attention of late after high intensity, attacking performances.
Speaking following Saturday's 4-3 victory over Crewe Alexandra, caretaker boss Williams was quick to heap praise upon Barry, while highlighting the importance of the returning captain - a player he dubs the most important at the club.
"Brad Barry was exceptional again and it was another fantastic performance. But to see Bradley play so well and then arguably the most important person at the entire football club to come on and replace him, it was a fantastic moment.
"Raphael immediately recognised and gave him (Thompson) the armband," Williams added.
Though the temporary first team manager admitted watching Thompson make his much anticipated return did not work too favourably on his nerves.
"To be honest, every time he got anywhere near anybody to make a tackle I was cringing because I was desperate for him to come through," said Williams.
"I think Nathan would tell you himself that he was probably as nervous today as he’s been for years, maybe since he made his debut.
“He so desperately wants to get back on the pitch and it was quite a long wait, but what a lovely moment," he added.
With Thompson emerging unscathed from the Crewe encounter and now looking likely to take his rightful place back in the Town set-up once more, Williams is relishing the prospect of having two fit, high calibre full backs.
"But it is a great situation for the club to have two very, very good right-sided full-backs," Williams said.
“Like I said before, I thought Bradley was exceptional as well and to see one talented, young Swindon player be replaced by what we now consider to be a senior player who is still a young man but has got his best years to come, it is fantastic for the football club," he added.
