Robins rock Belle Vue with first home defeat

Swindon Robins 'tore up the script' according to manager Alun Rossiter, as they travelled to Manchester to become the first team to face - and defeat - Belle Vue Aces at their brand new arena.

Swindon stormed to the top of the Elite League table courtesy of their fourth win as they claimed a stunning 50-40 triumph.

The M&S Van Rental Robins put in another spectacular display to become the first ever winners of an Elite League meeting at the new National Speedway Stadium.

It was a sensational performance from Alun Rossiter’s side to continue their fine run of form and claim their second victory of the season over the highly-rated Aces.

Their win was made all the more remarkable by the absence of inspirational skipper Jason Doyle through injury – and team boss Rossiter was full of praise for his determined side.

“I don’t think that was written in the script, and I think we spoilt the party!” Rossiter said.

“Full credit to the boys, they were brilliant from start to finish and fully deserved to get all four points.

“I think we were rather fortunate to be the first team to come here as Belle Vue still aren’t dialled into the track, but we still had to take advantage of that.

“We had a tough meeting against Wolves, but we’ve bounced back in brilliant fashion with four wins on the bounce and the boys have shown lots of character.”

With Doyle ruled out, Great Britain star Chris Harris stepped in and battled to an important 6+1 point haul.
However, it was Rohan Tungate who proved the Robins’ match-winner as he raced to a magnificent 15+2 point haul at reserve.

Tungate dropped just one point to an opposing rider and joined forces with Nick Morris in heat 15 for a 5-1 which saw them secure all four Elite League points.

Morris bounced back from a tough start to reel off three consecutive wins in his final three outings, including the ride of the night in heat 11 to snatch victory from Grand Prix ace Matej Zagar.

Middle order duo Josh Grajczonek and Justin Sedgmen put in solid performances, bagging a race win apiece, whilst Stefan Nielsen enjoyed a welcome return to form against his former club.

Charles Wright was also involved in a crucial heat four maximum despite otherwise enduring a tough evening in the No.2 spot.

The in-form Robins will be back in action as they travel to King’s Lynn next Wednesday (7.30) before hosting the Stars in the return fixture 24 hours later on Thursday, May 19 (7.30).

BELLE VUE 40: Craig Cook 8, Steve Worrall 8, Richie Worrall 7+3, Matej Zagar 7+1, Scott Nicholls 6, Joe Jacobs 4+1, Max Fricke R/R.

SWINDON 50: Rohan Tungate 15+2, Nick Morris 9, Chris Harris 6+1, Justin Sedgmen 6+1, Josh Grajczonek 6, Stefan Nielsen 6+1, Charles Wright 2+1.
