Scoring twice should have been enough to win, according to Swindon Town boss David Flitcroft

Despite creating little from open play, the two goals Swindon did manage to score on Friday night should have been enough to beat Colchester, David Flitcroft has said.

Swindon's poor form continued at home to Colchester, as a 3-2 defeat at the County Ground resulted in Town's fifth defeat on the trot in all competitions and it was their third defeat in a row in the league as well.

Although the Robins scored twice, they only had eight shots throughout the entire 90 with three of those being on target - the pair of goals and an early Matt Taylor free-kick that was easily saved.

Colchester had an identical tally, although all three of their shots on target found the back of the net.

Both of Swindon's goals on Friday night came via poorly-defended set pieces, which has added fuel to the fire that David Flitcroft's side are over-reliant on deliveries from Matt Taylor and currently injured Chris Hussey from deadball situations.

In terms of cold, hard numbers, 13 of Swindon's 32 league goals (40.63%) have come as a result of free-kicks, corners, or penalties and that increases to 21 of 48 goals (43.75%) in all competitions this season.

When asked whether he thought Swindon offered enough going forward against Colchester, Flitcroft replied: "When you score twice at home, that should be enough to not get beat, but definitely win a game.

"Kaiyne Woolery's pull back late on - no-one with real desire to slide and get on the end of it.

"So, yeah I believe we've done enough to win the football match having scored two goals - you're certainly not going to win football matches by conceding three in the manner we have done."

As well as scoring twice via poorly-defended set-pieces on Friday, Swindon conceded two from defending set-pieces badly themselves, something Flitcroft was especially annoyed with given Town were working on that during an enforced break.

"We've gone through over the last 10 days - being resilient, not conceding through set-pieces, we've done a lot of work on it.

"Second phase we go one goal up to the good and, right before half-time, to give the goal away is criminal.

"We don't clear our lines, we get punished, momentum swings with them, and the second goal is a clean header. He (Mikael Mandron) has got too much time to place his header where he wants it so I'm really disappointed.

"There's been an inquest and it's now challenging us to turn this around."
