Scott Nicholls reflects on Swindon Robin's defeat of Belle Vue
Belle Vue Aces left the Abbey last week with their tails between their legs, after seeing their unbeaten start to the Elite League season come to an end at the hands of Alun Rossiter's Swindon Robins side
The Robins came away with an emphatic 50-41 victory, and Total Sport’s Ryan Walker caught up with the Aces Scott Nicholls to get his reaction on the defeat.
A first season defeat for the Belle Vue Aces see’s them slip to fifth position in the Elite League table with the Swindon Robins just two points behind on six points in sixth. And Nicholls admits that it was a tough night of racing for the Aces at the Abbey Stadium.
“It was a definitely a tough night for us tonight.” Nicholls began.
“Obviously we arrived in a confident mood given our recent results but not underestimating Swindon.
“We came wanting the win but in honest we got our rear-ends kicked," he added.
A slick track on the night meant that making quick gate starts was all the more important, and Nicholls feels that this was the difference on a night packed of hard, fast racing.
“We all struggled to find the right set ups on the night, and the Swindon boys were just gating better than us all,” Nicholls explained.
“Swindon’s a good track to ride on but it can be difficult to pass on and that’s where we paid the price heavily and the score line shows that.
“There wasn’t much overtaking on the night and credit to Swindon they caught us off guard," he added.
“It’s only our third meeting of the season so it’s still early days yet so we wont be too disappointed and will keep looking forward," said Nicholls.
When discussing the lack of overtaking on the night Nicholls agreed that a slick track meant that whoever made the starts appeared to win the race, adding however that a big track at Blunsdon always made for quick racing.
“That’s the way the track is here and at least it’s smooth and not bumpy," he said.
“Swindon is just one of those tracks where it’s fast and is a nice track to ride on but difficult to overtake on," Nicholls added.
Away from Elite League Speedway, Nicholls will once again be vying for a spot under Alun Rossiter in team GB as Britain host the Speedway World Cup final in July. And Nicholls insisted that being in the team would mean everything.
“The World Cup is a great competition to race in and there is nothing better than representing your country," said Nicholls.
“I’ve been out of the competition for a few years now but I’m back and am ready to fight for my place.
“We’ve got the British championships coming up as well which is always a special competition for myself and one that I want to win," he added.
