Speedway: Sedgmen Takes Positives From Aus Championship
Swindon Robins star Justin Sedgmen was keen to focus on the positives after a solid yet unspectacular start to his Australian Championship campaign, which saw him crash in heat 16 and hinder his route directly into the A final.
Heading into the Kurri Kurri event, Sedgmen had been boosted by the absence of several prominent riders, including Robins team mate Jason Doyle, along with Chris Holder and former Robins' captain Troy Batchelor, and was keen to take his chance to make a stab for the title.
But, After bagging seven points from his opening three rides in the opening round of the series in Kurri Kurri, the 23-year-old was left battered and bruised by a heavy crash in heat 16.
He nonetheless dusted himself down to record a much-needed win in his final outing to keep his hopes of success alive – but his night was brought to a conclusion with a third place finish in the B Final.
Sedgmen ended the night with 10 points as Rohan Tungate claimed victory ahead of Sam Masters and Max Fricke.
The new Robins’ signing admitted he was left ruing his heat 16 spill which cost him a passage directly to the A Final.
However, he remains optimistic of bouncing back in the second round at Undera on Wednesday as he chases a podium finish in the competition.
Sedgmen said: “There is no doubt that race cost me a place in the A Final. If I had got the better of Max (Fricke) in that one I think I would have been straight in the final. Instead I had to fight for a win just to get into the B Final.
“To look at the positives I won a race that I knew I couldn’t afford to lose, I think that showed my character but I just wish it could have ended a little differently.
“My hip and arm is still pretty sore but I’ll be ok for Wednesday in Undera. I know now I have to be at my very best over the next three rounds to make sure I still have a chance of making at least a podium finish this year.
“I have to take one round at a time though, there is no point looking past Undera and I’ll be determined to put in a good performance to catch up the guys who’ve had good nights tonight.”
