Swindon are not crying out for a towering defender - Michael Flynn

Michael Flynn does not believe that Swindon Town are desperate for an imposing centre-back in the final week of the transfer window. Total Sport’s Joe Acklam spoke to the manager ahead of the visit of Crawley Town.

Many fans have said that Town are lacking the physical and experienced defender to play in the middle of the back three in the aftermath of conceding five goals against Wrexham AFC last weekend.

However, Flynn has said that he does not believe that bringing in a player like this would be the answer to all of Swindon’s problems and needs more from his defenders than just size.

He said: “I am not fully buying into that [needing a big defender] because everything we were worried about [against Wrexham], i.e., the long throw and set plays, we dealt with and did so very well.

“The mistakes were mistakes, and they have to be eradicated because they are costing us at the minute.

“I understand why fans have said that, but I wasn’t looking at it and thinking, if only we had this, I was thinking if only we cut out those mistakes.

“None of the first four goals have anything to do with a six-foot four player, and the fifth goal when [Tom] Brewitt got back on the line and tried to clear it, maybe if he was a bit taller, he could have done.

“[How good they are on the ball] is a big consideration and if there was a big six-foot four centre-back out there in our price range that could play, I would have gone for them.

“I have tried to get one in, but we couldn’t agree on the figures, so he is not here.”

Flynn also revealed that with the transfer window ending next Friday, he remains hopeful of adding a few extra players to his squad before the deadline.

He said: “I am hoping to get some in and if we don’t then it won’t be through a lack of trying that there won’t be extra faces in, that is for dead certain.

“In an ideal world I would want four, I think we are only going to do two or three.

“It is a challenge to find the players I want, never mind the budget, because there are players we have missed out on which were nothing to do with figures.

“There is location, they have chosen other clubs, and I think when people hear Wrexham are interested in them everything gets put on hold.

“That is because of their financial clout and the hoo-ha around them, so that doesn’t help.

“We have been patient and thorough in our decision making throughout the summer and we will have to carry on doing that.”
