BREAKING: Swindon's Oasis leisure centre to be permanently closed
SWINDON’s Oasis Leisure Centre is closing its doors for good next month as the impact of both national lockdowns have left operators with a difficult financial decision to make.
When lockdown lifts next month, Oasis will remain permanently closed with leisure operators GLL and managing landlord Seven Capital deeming the Oasis no longer viable following a recent review that highlighted the money being lost and substantial rent requirements.
GLL will hand the lease back over to Seven Capital who will now look to find new tenants.
Twelve contracted staff will be directly affected by the closure with personal trainers, lifeguards, and swimming teachers also set to lose significant income.
GLL will continue with operations at their six other Better facilities based in Swindon and staff will be relocated to these locations where possible.
Local boxing promoter, Mark Neilson who host small-hall events at the Oasis said:
"The Oasis closure is a huge blow for Swindon, I’ve had some great shows on there, in fact some of my biggest local events were held there.
"We had 3 events scheduled for this year until COVID took hold and were planning for maybe 5-6 next year when crowds were allowed back into venues. Unfortunately, although there are other venues, none had the capacity that the Oasis did so it will affect us," he said.
