Swindon Robins 55 Coventry Bees 36: Race report
Swindon Robins sent out a serious statement of play-off intent with a resounding 55-36 win over Coventry at the Abbey on Monday. In front of an eager crowd and the Sky Sports camera, Rossiter's men stepped up to the plate. Here's how the action unfolded.
The M&S Van Rental Robins gave one of their most convincing performances of the season and never looked like slipping up as they advanced to second position in the Elite League table.
A strong all-round effort from Alun Rossiter’s side was headlined by the display of Justin Sedgmen, who won four of his five rides – whilst Rohan Tungate was unbeaten in his first three outings.
And with only four last places throughout the meeting, the Robins had plenty of strength to counter the challenge of the Bees, who were led enthusiastically by Chris Harris and Danny King but for whom No.1 Krzysztof Kasprzak endured a miserable night.
Robins opened up with a 5-1 from Tungate and skipper Jason Doyle in Heat 1, but initially saw their lead pegged back to two points.
Passing moves from both Sedgmen and Stefan Nielsen helped them notch a 4-2 in Heat 4, and that was the start of a blistering run of race advantages.
Between Heats 4 and 10, the Robins out-scored the Bees 32-12, and that even included a second-place tactical ride from King when he lost out to Sedgmen in Heat 8.
There were four Robins 5-1s in that period, including a back-to-back pair of maximums in Heats 9 and 10 to put the home side into a massive 22-point lead.
Coventry rallied late on with King and Harris inflicting a rare 5-1 reverse on Doyle, and Charles Wright fell in the second reserves’ race - but Sedgmen had the final say as he took a super win in Heat 15 to wrap up a commanding display.
Boss Alun Rossiter said: “I’m very pleased with the boys tonight. It’s been a long time coming for us to hit a team as hard as that, and there’s always a good rivalry with Coventry so it’s a nice result for us.
“I’m full of confidence in our boys. I’ve always said that I have faith in them, and I think we’ve recovered well from the blip we had a month or so ago.
“It would be nice to get something away from home as well, and if we can do that it will fully cancel out the home defeats, but things are looking good for us.”
Robins will look to keep up their momentum when league leaders Wolverhampton visit the Abbey on Thursday.
