Swindon Robins Will Begin Season At The Abbey

Swindon Robins speedway have today confirmed they will begin the 2016 campaign on the Abbey track, after construction work has slowed down the process of the new stadium development.

Club owner Terry Russell has revealed how the Robins are likely to race the first half of their home league fixtures on the current Abbey Stadium track – as construction work is being completed on their new venue next door.

Delays to the start of stadium work have caused concern and rumour within speedway racing circles.

Responding to these concerns, Terry Russell said: “First and foremost let me say this – Swindon will be at the tapes and racing in the 2016 Elite League.

"We have always had an agreement in place with our landlords, Stadia UK that the current Abbey Stadium facility would remain operational until the new Stadium is ready.

“The delays during the last three months have been caused by the need to install acoustic barriers, but I am pleased to report we are almost there with this and am reassured by Stadia UK that our fans will be able to see the new Stadium well on the way, when we host our first meeting at the Abbey next season.

“We are planning to race the first half of our home league fixtures on the current Abbey track and to move across to the new Stadium mid-season. So, the Robins will be riding in the new stadium next season and it will be a very nice facility for the sport.

"A lot of work has already gone into this and once the acoustic barrier has been passed and ready to go things will happen very quickly.

“There have been delays and they have been frustrating. But we will be racing in 2016 and we are looking forward to it, particularly with the signings we have made so far.

“I must also emphasise the Abbey Farewell we staged in October remains the official farewell meeting. There is no way we will be doing another. It’s time to look forward with enthusiasm and optimism about our chances of reaching the play-offs," Russell added.
