Swindon Southpaw Jamie Cox Rises In WBO Rankings

Swindon boxer Jamie Cox has moved up to fourth in the WBO world rankings, following recent win over Ferenc Albert. Promoter Frank Warren now eyes mouth-watering UK clash against Callum Smith.

The super middleweight fighter dispatched Albert in the first round during his last fight, held in Dublin on Saturday, November 7, claiming the victory after knocking his opponent to the canvas twice in the opening 60 seconds.

The win meant Cox has won each of his three previous fights by knock-out, a stat which was duly relfected in the WBO world rankings as Cox moved up to fourth in his division.

Cox now sits behind only the USA's Jesse Hart, Denmark's Patrick Nielsen, Mexico's Gilberto Ramirez and world champion Arthur Abraham of Armenia.

Promoter Frank Warren is confident a world title fight is not too far in the offing for the Swindon hitman, who is keen to prove himself on the biggest stage of all.

Warren has already expressed his desire to set up a bout between Cox and fellow unbeaten fighter Callum Smith.

Writing on his official blog, Warren said: 'Anyone who knows boxing knows that Callum Smith and Jamie Cox, both unbeaten and blistering punchers with almost identical records, would put on a terrific scrap, one that would be right up there among the fights of any year. It is a natural match, and one I believe the Board of Control should make for the British title.'

Smith stands as an ideal match for Cox on paper, after recently making light work of Rocky Fielding in Liverpool, brushing his opponent aside with a first round knock-out.

Warren has also suggested the winner of a potential Cox - Smith clash would make a worthy candidate for a world title shot.

Warren wrote, 'He and Jamie is a really big fight and the winner would be a worthy contender for any of the super-middleweight world titles.

'I know Cox really fancies his chances against either Fedor Chudinov or Badou Jack, who he has already beaten in the amateurs. I’d put him in with any of the current world champions because he’s not a baby, he’s 29 and probably now at the peak of his career.'
