Swindon Supermarine Unveil New Superdome

Swindon Supermarine have revealed their latest project to the world, a £350,000 state-of-the-art air dome to cover a 3G playing surface.

A team of volunteers embarked upon the Supermarine training facility on Sunday, braving poor weather to help essemble the large structure which has been months in the planning.

The errection of the dome structure now means the Supermarine side have both a surface to train upon 12 months of the year, throughout all seasons, but also a facility to hire out for the public use.

The dome will therefore benefit the club in both and performance and monetary sense, and will assist Supermarine in pushing forward in search of climbing up the football leagues.

Supermarine chairman Jez Webb has welcomed the new developments as the beginning of a brand new era for the Swindon club, believing the new Superdome to "provide one of the best indoor playing facilities in Southern England."

Speaking to local media, Webb said: "There is a huge demand in Swindon for indoor pitches so we will be able to cater for that. The team will use it and there is also a big youth set-up here so there is demand from within the club.

“We have designed it so we can have three pitches running across the 47 metre width or we have dividing nets which can be easily drawn back to give one big pitch running lengthways."

Webb explained that the first developments to improving the playing facilities of Supermarine was to install rubber shock pads underneath the playing surface, preventing the increased risk of ligament or joint damage during sessions.

Webb admitted the investment was not a money-making tactic by the club, but instead a means of raising capital to invest back into Supermarine to make the side as competitive as possible.

Webb said: "We have always been on a solid financial footing but I realised very quickly that more would be needed if we want to move up through the leagues.

“This is not to make money and but to generate money which can then be put back into the team."

The Supermarine team will be using the dome in the coming weeks, though further work is needed to be done meaning the facility is expected to be open to the public in the new year.
