Swindon Town 1 Gillingham 3: Player Ratings
Swindon Town were unable to make it five wins in five on Boxing Day, as they fell to high-flying Gillingham at the County Ground. Martin Ling's side were defeated by three goals to one by their Kent-based counterparts, and Total Sport's Chris Linnell was on hand to deliver his player ratings.
Lawrence Vigouroux - 6
The Liverpool loanee gets a tick in the box for his late penalty save. However, the usual tomfoolery continued and he almost became unstuck mid-way through the second half, with only an offside decision sparing his blushes. Despite conceding three goals he was one of the better players on the pitch.
Brad Barry - 6
Barry looked comfortable in possession on the right flank, as he has done for the majority of the season, but found himself charged with the tough task of marking both Bradley Dack and Bradley Garmston, with the Gillingham duo proving a handful from start to finish.
Raphael Rossi Branco - 4
Where to start with the Brazilian? Branco has been Town's best player throughout the opening months of the 2015/16 campaign and was more involved than most against the Gills. However, we saw shades of last season when a rush of blood saw him pick up a second yellow card for a rash tackle late on in the game.
Adam El-Abd - 5
The experienced Egyptian did well in spells as he sought to marshall the Town back four. Nonetheless, his lack of pace left him wanting as he succumbed to the energy of the opposition forward pair, Rory Donnelly and Dominic Samuel.
Jordan Turnbull - 5
Turnbull looked out of sorts at left back, finding himself overcome by the physicality of Gillingham’s Josh Wright and Ryan Jackson. With Rossi Branco suspended for Town's trip north to Burton Albion, the youngster will be best served being restored to his natural centre back role.
Anton Rodgers – 3
Or, Anon Rodgers, to be more precise. The 22-year-old offered very little in the centre of the park, misplaced a number of passes and found himself dispossessed in compromising positions as the game went on. It’s concerning to think that Rodgers may be a regular starter for the remainder of the season.
Louis Thompson - 6
Thompson put up a brave fight in the middle but ultimately found himself overpowered by a disciplined Gillingham midfield. He carried the ball forward with intent but proved unable to assist the two strikers in the final third.
Ben Gladwin - 4
Gladwin played his part in town's build up to the opening goal but went missing from there on in. As has often been the case since his return from QPR, he offered very little defensively, was lackadaisical in possession and squandered each of his limited chances in front of goal.
Fabian Robert - 5
Robert was eager to get on the ball in central midfield, which is more than can be said for most, but his advances in the final third were ultimately thwarted. It was a surprise to see the Frenchman replaced so early in the second half as one gets the feeling he had slightly more to offer.
Nicky Ajose - 5
Ajose gave his usual work rate up top, but was given very little service from the midfield. It's unfair to criticise a striker when they are given so few opportunities. Nonetheless, he will be disappointed with his overall level of performance.
Jon Obika - 5
Just like his strike partner, Obika proved ineffective due to a lack of supply. He did well to hold up the ball and latched onto a number of Vigouroux’s kicks, although the majority of his time was spent chasing possession.
Substitutes
Yaser Kasim - 4
Kasim hardly broke a sweat after replacing Fabian Robert in the second half. The Iraqi international is always far too eager to pass the ball backwards rather than step up and create an attacking chance for himself or his teammates. Furthermore, despite being one of the freshest players on the pitch, he found himself caught in possession far too easily.
James Brophy – N/A
Drissa Traore – N/A
