Swindon Town appoint David Flitcroft as manager
Swindon Town have appointed David Flitcroft as the club's new manager, one month after the departure of Luke Williams.
The Robins have been without a manager since they parted company with Williams on May 5 following relegation to League Two.
Flitcroft has had two previous jobs, at Barnsley and Bury, following a playing career that saw him feature for the likes of Preston North End, Chester City, and Rochdale.
On June 1, 2011, Flitcroft was appointed as the assistant manager of Barnsley, but, following the sacking of Keith Hill he was put in temporary charge of the Championship club on December 30, 2012.
After winning two of his three matches as interim boss, against Burnley in the FA Cup and Leeds in the Championship, Flitcroft got the top job on a permanent basis and kept the Tykes in the Championship that season.
He was sacked on November 30, 2013 though following a run of one win in 11, and a 3-0 defeat at home to Birmingham City was the final straw. He won 14 of his 45 games in charge of Barnsley, giving him a win percentage of 31.1.
The now 43-year-old was not out of work for long, however, on December 9 he was named as the new manager of Bury.
Flitcroft initially saved the Shakers from relegation from League Two, and guided them to a 12th-placed finish in the second half of the season and, the following year, he took Bury into League One.
Bury finished third in League Two, winning 1-0 at home to Tranmere on the last day to secure promotion, but Flitcroft's side struggled back in League One and Flitcroft was shown the door on November 16 after a run of 11 games without a win.
Bury escaped the drop with new boss Lee Clark in charge, but Swindon find themselves back in League Two.
Flitcroft has a big job on his hands at Swindon, given that the club will be expecting an immediate return to League One.
He will get the chance to build the team in his image though, as Swindon only have 10 contracted players currently, and the new boss will be given sole responsibility of transfers.
In a statement, Swindon Town said: "The club has taken its time over this appointment as it was vital after relegation that we got the right man to take the club forward and give us the best chance of promotion back to League One at the first time of asking. We are convinced David is this man.
Swindon Town have not yet revealed the length of Flitcroft's contract.
