David Flitcroft explains the absence of Lawrence Vigouroux, James Brophy and Johnny Goddard
Swindon Town manager David Flitcroft has revealed Lawrence Vigouroux and James Brophy disobeyed club orders, while Johnny Goddard has the flu.
Goalkeeper Vigouroux, Brophy and Goddard were all left out of the 18-man squad that won 2-1 at Barnet on New Year's Day, which led to speculation that the trio are set to leave the club, after the winter transfer window opened today.
That will not have decreased for the first two, as boss Flitcroft was clearly annoyed with the behaviour of Vigouroux and Brophy who, according to the manager, were out in town the night of the 1-0 win over Notts County, a game the pair were unused subs in.
Midfielder Goddard missed the game through illness though, Flitcroft said.
"Goddard, he's really come down with the flu.
"We've had a little bit of it - some of the staff had to have a couple of days off, it really got hold of Johnny G and I made the decision today: 'listen, stay away'.
"He tried to do something last night and we made the decision, we'll go without [him]."
The situation is more serious for Vigouroux and Brophy, he continued.
"The other two, Vigouroux and Brophy, they disobeyed club orders, and from a disciplinary point of view, that's why they've not travelled with us, they were out in Swindon when they shouldn't have been.
"They got away with it last year, but under my watch they won't get away with it.
"We've got to seriously get that right and we'll definitely be on with that.
"They've done a session this morning, eight o'clock, before we set off, they'll be training tomorrow and probably won't be with the squad for the forseeable future until we've ironed it out
"You've got to stamp it out, I know in the past it's almost been accepted because they're talented people but you can't have it in any organisation, the lack of discipline, a lack of respect.
"Fans have paid a lot of money over Christmas, they've had to pay for four games, our fans that have come down today, so for them to think that a Swindon player is out and about in town two days before the game, it's absolutely appaling, I certainly want to do something about it."
Vigouroux in particular has been involved in off-the-pitch in the past. He infamously once paid a £50 fine for missing training in 1p coins, which led to his then-loan from Liverpool being cut short, although it was restored once he apologised.
He and Brophy were also part of a four-man group that Luke Williams once accused of lacking commitment to last season's relegation fight in a post-match rant after a 4-2 home defeat to Sheffield United.
The question was inevitably asked to Flitcroft whether this will lead to last season's player-of-the-year Vigouroux potentially being out of his plans forever, but he was tight-lipped on that.
"It's not for me after the Barnet victory to go into that, it's given me some thinking time.
"This isn't just this season, there's previous and previous and previous.
"The squad don't deserve it, the supporters don't deserve it and I certainly don't, the chairman doesn't.
"We'll deal with it and we'll let you know as that goes on."
