Swindon Town chairman Lee Power "won't rest until the club is back in League One"

Swindon Town chairman Lee Power thinks a big rebuild job is needed at the club in order to return to League One, but says he will not rest until they have done so.

A five-year stay in League One was ended on Saturday by Scunthorpe United with one game of the season, Charlton away on Sunday, still to be played.

Town fans can take small solace from the fact that on the last two occasions that Swindon have been relegated they have been promoted back up at the first time of asking, most recently as champions, in 2012 under the guidance of maverick Italian Paolo Di Canio.

Chairman Power thinks "a complete clean-out" is needed to restore the Robins to former glories.

This is easily done for Swindon in the summer, as only 12 senior players are definitely contracted at the County Ground come July 1.

Speaking to BBC Wiltshire on Saturday, Power said: "There needs to be a complete clean-out, there's no two ways about that.

"Obviously, we need the dust to settle over the next week or two, review everything top-to-bottom and, one thing's for sure, the hard work starts again and I won't rest until the club's back in League One."

When asked if the overhaul included coaching staff, the reply from Power was "everything."

Head coach Luke Williams is just over a year into a five-year contract, while director of football Tim Sherwood is no longer involved in the coaching aspect of the club, and, according to Power back in November, he is not contracted to the club.

"Tim, like I said to everyone, came in, did a review of the club, and the most important part was trying to identify players to try and get us out of the position we were in," Power continued.

"That hasn't happened, Tim did us a favour for me and, again, I'll sit with Tim and see what he thinks and wants to do."

Sherwood was in charge of transfers during the January window, and he brought in eight new players, however, six of them were on a loan deal until the end of the season.

"I think everyone makes a big thing out of the loans like we're the only team that does it," Power resumed.

"Every team does it, we just haven't done it well enough. Now's not the time to look at it, we need to look at everything - the way that we play, the philosophy of the club, and just everything, really.

"We need to learn by a lot of mistakes we made this year and try and come back stronger.

"(I am) not sure (if Swindon can play their way out of League Two) - it's just something we need to sit down and analyse and look at.

"There's so many things. We're going to have, more or less, a clean canvas to start the season.

"(Relegation) only happened 15 minutes ago but there's a lot of reviewing and a lot that needs to go on because this club doesn't deserve to be in League Two.

"It is now, and we need to be back in League One."
