FA CUP PRESS CONFERENCE LIVE: Crewe Alexandra v Swindon Town
Good morning and welcome to a rare FA Cup press conference live blog as Swindon Town kick off their FA Cup campaign with a visit to Crewe Alexandra in the first round of the cup tomorrow. Join Total Sport Swindon;'s Ryan Walker as he speaks to Swindon Town Head Coach Ben Garner.
That conclude's today's press conference. Thank you for joining us.
Garner on January transfer budget:
"I haven't had any conversations with the owner along the lines of if we have a cup run then will more transfer budget be available. Our budget is what it is and we are still under parts of a transfer embargo that restricts us in a number of factors and in some ways that is nice because we know exactly where we are. The conversations me and Ben Chorley have are pretty simple and if we do progress in the cup and earn more money then I certainly won't be going to the owner to ask for more."
Garner on balancing FA Cup and League games:
"We want to win every game and do well in every competition we are in. We want to finish as high in the league as possible and progress as far as we can in the FA Cup and the EFL Trophy. Sometimes we will rotate the team to do that but whatever team we put out is one we think can go and win that game. There are different players who play in different competitions and they deserve those opportunities."
Garner on players desire to play in the FA Cup:
"I would say with our group their is an eagerness to play in every competition and that is a massive credit to this squad. Whatever competition we have played in so far, the intensity has been the same, the preparations have been done in the same way, and the players focus has been exactly the same. There is the sam focus as always and that is a credit to these players."
Garner on Crewe's style:
"They have a few mixed styles, they can go more direct and they have good creativity in the way they attack. We have looked at them in detail, know what danger they pose and we are looking to go and win the game. Every game for them is one they are trying to win at the moment. A win in the cup could inject life into their league form and we just want to control what we can control."
Garner on Ricky Aguiar:
"It is a 28-day loan and we will honour that period and that make a decision on him then. He is learning different sides to the game and there are elements we can't replicate in training and he is learning that in playing out on loan."
Swindon on FA Cup youth performance:
"Fair play to Winchester, they made it tough and we had to come out our shape a bit and it's fantastic to have the youth team in the next round and hopefully we can go far in that competition as well."
Garner on cup run finances:
"I'm sure a cup run would certainly help the owner and we want to do as well as possible in every cup. We are in the quarter-final of the EFL Trophy now without kicking a ball this week and next week is a positive game for us with players able to have an opportunity to stake their claim to play."
Garner on International call-ups:
"We have the option to call the Crawley game off with the international call-ups but we don't intend to do that. We want to win games in this division, we picked up 4 out of 6 points in the last call-up and we want to keep going. Calling off a game can become a headache later in the season so we would rather play the game now and try to win and get 3 points on the board."
Garner on injuries:
"Romoney Crichlow still has a swollen ankle, he has his foot in a protective boot and is certainly unavailable tomorrow. We have had a couple of knocks in training but nothing too major and I'm confident all will be available apart from Romoney. We have permission for all our loan players to play in the FA Cup."
Garner on Crewe:
"They have good players and are a League One team and there are some very good players there with the quality they have within their squad. They are desperate to get momentum into their season but you can lever look too much into a draw."
Garner on the FA Cup:
"We are excited, we want to go far in this competition and I have great memories of the FA Cup as a kid. FA Cup games are always a great occasion and hopefully tomorrow is another one."
