Swindon were the better side for the majority of the first half on Saturday afternoon, but once captain Olly Lancashire put through his own net in the 36th minute, visitors Crawley took control.
The Robins, although not to the level of the first half, continued to control possession but, when chasing the game, Swindon ended up conceding a further two goals in the closing stages.
Speaking after the full-time whistle at the County Ground, manager David Flitcroft rued his side's lack of clinical edge.
"From a preparation point of view this week I've not seen it coming," he began.
"We've discussed about playing at home and energising the fans. For half an hour we tried to do that.
"When we didn't score and they did, I wouldn't have expected in a million years for us to down tools and not be able to recover.
"At 1-0 down I always say to the players you've got an equal chance of getting onto the scoresheet and keep ploughing away, and they sort of folded in the second half.
"They didn't represent anything that I'm about and Swindon Town's about so I'm really disappointed about that.
"Potentially we might have been chasing the game too quick at 1-0 down and (I've) got to look at that myself and I'll analyse it over the weekend and Monday.
"The second half was unacceptable and I can only apologise for that. I've said to the players and we'll dissect it on Monday and make sure that it doesn't happen again. That's what I guarentee as a manager - to do that."
Swindon are next back in action next Saturday when they host Barnet. It will be their third home game in all competitions this season and Flitcroft is still after his first win at the County Ground.
