Swindon Town's David Flitcroft excited by Scott Twine's outing in Melksham friendly win

Swindon Town youth academy graduate Scott Twine was the player that David Flitcroft could not stop talking about post-match.

Twine, who does not turn 18 until Friday, scored Swindon's third goal in their 5-0 friendly win over Melksham Town on Tuesday night.

It was a fantastic goal, too, as his long-distance effort flew past the opposition goalkeeper and nestled into the bottom corner, which made it his first goal of this pre-season.

The 17-year-old has had to watch new strikers come through the doors of the County Ground in recent days, after Paul Mullin signed earlier on this month while today (Wednesday), Town announced the season-long loan addition of Harry Smith.

He may still feature in Flitcroft's plans this season though, given how much the gaffer spoke highly of him post-match.

"Scott Twine has really impressed me tonight," Flitcroft began.

"He's someone that, when I look at him, he looks as though he'll get bullied and dominated but he doesn't, he keeps getting up and going again and he's an absolute nightmare for any defender.

"He does the exact opposite to what the defender wants to happen so I'm delighted with Scott tonight, he's had a good night.

"We're learning things all the time, that's what these games are for and it's been a positive night."

Flitcroft was then asked different, un-related questions but, when the question of whether he is getting closer to knowing his team for the opening day of the season came up, so did the name Scott Twine again.

"Like I said, tonight I found out something about one of my players - Scott Twine.

"He's what I believe football's about - that enthusiasm, playing with that energy.

"He has (grown up quickly). The kid loves football, you see this energy and it takes people a long way, I keep saying that energy and enthusiasm takes people a long way and Scott certainly possesses that.

"We find out things all the time about these group of players, we're nowhere near the finished article but from what we started from, from ground zero to what we are now, I'm a lot more positive in how things are rolling on.

"But we'll keep improving the squad, improving how we attack teams and how we defend against teams and we're on the right path."
