Sherwood was appointed as the club's director of football on November 10, 2016, but the man who once led Aston Villa to an FA Cup final was not able to steer Swindon clear of relegation.
Prior to Sherwood's November appointment, head coach Luke Williams was in charge of tactics and team selection, but that was handed over to Sherwood, as well as the decisive say in transfers, and the ex-Spurs boss brought eight new faces to the County Ground in January, although six of those were loans.
The Sherwood reign got going with a resounding 3-0 win over Charlton but Swindon's form never really picked up, as they then won only two of 12 matches under the guidance of Sherwood.
Later on in the season it was revealed that Williams was put back in charge of team selection ahead of the home derby defeat to Oxford, which Sherwood did not attend due to important club duties that could only be done on that day, according to chairman Lee Power.
With Williams back at the helm results briefly picked up, with back-to-back wins in the first time in over a year following victories over Coventry and Gillingham and, after a four-match losing streak, Town got six points from six again in their desperate attempt to avoid the drop.
They have not won in the five games since though, and a 2-1 reverse at home to Scunthorpe at the weekend saw them relegated to League Two for the first time since 2011, with one game of the season still to go.
Swindon in the last few years have prided themselves on a philosophy of passing football, but under Sherwood this was abandoned in favour of route one football for the majority.
Speaking after the final whistle, a dejected Williams told the local media that he did not want to talk about anybody apart from himself in terms of accountability but does not think Sherwood's impact, or lack thereof, interrupted the club's philosophy.
"I don't think so," he said.
"I think other people can answer that, if they believe that there has been.
"For me, I've tried to do the best that I possibly can in whatever capacity I've been working at the club, I've had many different scenarios and many different roles, I'm not a whinger, I don't compain, I don't go missing in tough times, I don't turn on people. That's how I've been raised, that's how I am as a person.
"I've got no-one to blame at all for this, only myself, and I've tried to do every single job that I've had at this club to the best of my ability."
