Swindon Town's Matt Taylor is "helping" the development of young wing-backs Kyle Knoyle and Ellis Iandolo

After being Saturday's match winner, Matt Taylor praised the efforts of his opposite wing-back Kyle Knoyle, as well as revealing he is helping develop both Knoyle and Ellis Iandolo.

Taylor scored the only goal in Swindon's 1-0 win over Mansfield at the weekend as Swindon's left wing-back in the 3-4-1-2 system.

The 37-year-old sang the praises of a much younger wing-back, 21-year-old Knoyle, who continues to impress on the right-hand side as he gets more and more experience of playing regular first-team football.

"Kyle is, I think at times, doubted himself too much, whereas I don't doubt him, his teammates don't doubt him, that's the type of person he is. Hoprefully today, he will take great pride from being part of an extremely good team performance," Taylor said at the end of the match.

"I think he was exceptionally good going forward, he was great in the air today so this hopefully will help him along the way realising his potential as a footballer.

"He was a young lad when in the youth setup at West Ham when I was there and it's just nice to see him carving out a career for himself in the game so hopefully it'll continue.

"It's difficult as a young player, especially when you come into a team that's been successful and you wait and you bide your time, that's part and parcel of learning though. I've been through it, all players that I know have been through it, because it can't always go right.

"There will be mistakes to be made, I made plenty of mistakes out there today and everybody else does as well, but it's about having a reset button and forgetting that mistake and move on because it's a game of football, it's not life or death.

"Kyle is a great kid and a great lad and if I can help him in any way, shape or form along with the other players in the so-called leadership group, the old ones we tend to call them, that will be vitally important."

Along with Knoyle, there is a young full-back on the other side in the shape of Ellis Iandolo, who was a number 10 until David Flitcroft arrived at the club and Taylor is playing a role in helping both.

"[I am] helping them, but regardless of how old you get, you have to focus on yourself first, you've got to focus on your performances because there's a lot of competition in this team and if I'm not performing, I won't keep the shirt.

"It's about respecting that shirt and respecting the players that don't have them because there's the best teams I've ever played in are the ones that have deep competition and we have that here but there's a respect that's in the group that's vitally important.

"Ellis did very well when he was in the team, he got a couple of very good assists and a nice goal at Barnet. I'm sure he would like to be in the team, as would all the guys that are not in the team.

"It's not about individuals, it's about 20, 21, 22 players, you can't be succesful on your own."
