Swindon's Mayor cuts the ribbon at new Moredon Sports Hub

On Tuesday 9th July, the mayor of Swindon, Councillor Imtiyaz Shaikh, officiated the opening of Moredon Sports Hub by cutting the ribbon at the brand-new venue.

Moredon Sports Hub, located off Akers Way in the Central Swindon North Parish, is a recently developed multi-sports complex and social centre. Offering state-of-the-art sporting facilities, a youth room, and a café, this hub caters to people of all ages, particularly those new to the sports available at the site. Notably, Moredon Sports Hub has also introduced a dedicated cycling hub to Swindon.

The hub designed for individuals who may have ceased participating in sports but are eager to return to physical activity, as well as those seeking to continue their activities in an improved environment.

This £6.3 million project has been delivered by Swindon Borough Council and is operated by North Central Swindon Parish Council. This scheme is partially funded by these councils, with additional funding from The Premier League, The FA, and the Government's Football Foundation, alongside Sport England through the Places to Ride Programme - a partnership between the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, Sport England, and British Cycling.

Facilities at Moredon Sports Hub include:

• A full-size floodlit 3G pitch, fully enclosed with fencing, suitable for multi-team training and senior and junior matches
• Natural sports pitches, including two football pitches and two cricket pitches
• A learn-to-ride programme for younger riders
• A 1km regional standard closed-road cycling circuit with several internal loops and crossover points, allowing three separate groups to use the track simultaneously
• Car park enhancements, providing 125 standard spaces, 11 accessible spaces, two minibus spaces, and 56 overflow spaces
• A coach drop-off point
• A new pavilion with improved changing areas, a café, and a reception area
