Review: Swindon Town's Season So far
With just twelve League One games left to play, Total Sport pauses to take stock of Swindon Town's season so far. Ryan Ainscow takes us through the previous seven months of football, as the Robins have endured a campaign of copious changes and mixed emotions.
Swindon Town's season has been average at best, sitting right in the middle of the table in 12th position. Now 13 points from the relegation zone and four points from the play-off positions.
The season started off reasonably well with a competitive pre season against some top level teams such as: Everton, Aston Villa, West Brom and Liverpool, setting Swindon Town in good stead for the season ahead.
Out of the first six league games the Robins Won two, Lost two and drew a further two games.
Here was the first game of the season against Bradford. Cast your minds back to this fixture:
Seven games in Swindon Town met Crewe Alexandra, where we picked up our 3rd win of the season after winning 3-1 away from home.
Then Swindon Town had a real rough patch of the season, not winning in 12 games (in all competitions) and generally experiencing a very poor run of form.
Consequently this run of games in around the month of October placed them in the relegation zone, and it was during this poor run of games Mark Cooper was replaced by former player Martin Ling. Ling Took charge in early November where he won his five out of his first six matches.
In January after the Shrewsbury away game. Ling announced his resignation due to health reasons which was very unexpected. He was subsequently replaced by assistant manager Luke Williams
Since the turn of November however, the Robins' form has improved drastically right up to where Swindon Town now currently find themselves. They won the next 10 out of 17 games in the league under both Martin Ling and Luke Williams, placing them in 12th position.
Closer to the Play-off positions rather than the relegation zone after an impressive turn around. The last away win came against Peterborough, with an impressive comeback from being 0-1 down to winning 2-1.
Williams' side then went on to dismantle a lacklustre Doncaster Rovers side, who left the County Ground with their tails between their legs earlier in the week.
We now look forward to how Swindon Town get on in the remaining fixtures of the League One season. Should the wins continue to roll in, who knows what could happen.
