Throwback to Swindon Town's Solitary Premier League Season

With football being on pause around most of the world, it is giving people the chance to look back at previous seasons, re-watch their favourite matches and re-live the glory days. For Swindon Town, some would argue that there have not been too many of those glory days to reflect upon but back in 1992-1993 season, they won the Championship play-offs to claim a place in England's top tier.

Optimism was high and fans were excited about the 1993-94 season, until the boat was rocked by manager Glenn Hoddle leaving to take up the managerial position at his beloved Chelsea. Having guided the Robins to promotion into the Premier League, Hoddle's exit seemed to give the team's confidence a blow and they struggled to go toe to toe with the likes of Manchester United and Blackburn, or anyone else really for that matter.

Fjortoft signed for the Premier League season

Despite having Jan Age Fjortoft leading the line, Swindon just couldn't keep up with the big boys. After starting with losses to Sheffield United and Oldham, the next two games saw them ship 5 goals in each game, with resounding losses to Liverpool and Southampton. It took them until 24th November to record their first win, which came against a QPR team that included Les Ferdinand and Trevor Sinclair in their starting lineup.

A draw away at Liverpool gave the players a bit of a boost and one positive was that John Moncur and Keith Scott joined the list of players who have scored at Anfield. Next up, they managed their second win of the season, gaining revenge against Southampton before coming back down to Earth with a bang, losing 4-0 to Arsenal.

Several heavy losses throughout the season

After a 6-2 battering by Everton, it finally looked like things were on the up with two wins in a row but anyone getting carried away soon had their hopes fade, as a 5-0 thumping from Aston Villa came next. A 7-1 loss to Newcastle in March was very painful to watch.

The season also saw them take on a record that they still hold today - most goals conceded (100) in a Premier League season over 42 games. As the Premier League moved to a 38 game season, it looks like Swindon Town could be stuck with that record forever. Unsurprisingly, Swindon finished bottom with Oldham and Sheffield United joining them, and the fortunes of the teams since then couldn't be more significant as United were one of the favourites in the Premier League betting to finish in the top six prior to the suspension of the league, while the Robins languish in League Two.

An unwanted record

To put that into comparison to recent Premier League seasons, Fulham conceded 81 goals when they got relegated last season and Stoke City conceded 68 the year before. Swindon's one season in the top flight might not have been memorable for the right reasons but some teams never even make it to the top. At least Swindon Town fans can say their team played in the Premier League, unlike those who follow Bristol City or Luton Town.
