Vic Morgan: A Weekend Of Triumph And Tragedy
Lifelong Swindon Town fan Vic Morgan writes every Tuesday for Total Sport. This week, Morgan reflects on a return to winning ways for the Robins, a win which soon paled into insignificance following the events in Paris.
It's been a while. A home win and a positive feeling on a Saturday night. Recent results have seen us plunge into the bottom two and face the prospect of a season long battle against relegation.
The first home appearance by new boss Martin Ling brought the hoped for lift and the desired victory. While it wasn't a classic, it was a win and that's all we wanted.
Defensively Swindon were strong. Led brilliantly by skipper Raphael Rossi Branco, who deservedly scored the opening goal and showed the passion we all want to see from our team.
Jordan Turnball was excellent as was Adam El Abd, surely this is a player we have to sign permanently in January. Showing all his experience, El Abd also looks like he cares, that'll always win fans over. So, it's a start.
The start of what, who knows? Saturday sees a long journey to Fleetwood. A side like us in the bottom reaches of the table. It's what you call a six pointer. To those of us making the journey, it'll be a long day but one which I've got a feeling might turn out to be successful on the back of that confidence boosting victory last weekend.
The second half showed that our football can be more direct. Played with pace and movement, Ben Gladwin suddenly looked the player we know he can be, playing positively and dominating his particular area of midfield.
A win, a lovely win then, bringing a smile on an otherwise sombre day. I think it's fair to say that Saturday's win over Scunthorpe brought a huge sense of relief to everyone except those who'd journeyed from Lincolnshire.
The weather somehow fitted the mood. It was wet, grey, windy and just unpleasant.
Hours before we'd seen, heard or read of horrific happenings in Paris. People had been killed while pursuing what many of us do. A night out, a rock concert and a football match.
The minutes silence before our game observed impeccably, paying respectful tribute to those who had their lives taken away for reasons most of us cannot understand.
The sound of an explosion at the Stade De France on footage seen by many of us, was just one of the truly shocking images from that weekend. Football has had it's problems in recent times with the FIFA scandal, but nothing compares to the anguish and horror of last Friday night in Paris.
