Vic Morgan: Hats off to Belford, Bring on Wigan

Lifelong Swindon Town fan Vic Morgan has his definitive say on the Robins' biggest talking points, every week on Total Sport. This week Morgan reserves special praise for goalkeeper Tyrell Belford, while eyeing up good Friday's opposition Wigan Athletic.

Sometimes things happen in football that give you a rather warm feeling. As the seconds ticked by to the end of Saturday's stalemate at the Ricoh in Coventry, a crucial thing happened.

The Sky Blues looked like they might win the game with a goal bound effort. That was until the ball was turned over by the Town goalkeeper Tyrell Belford. A crucial save at a crucial moment. Okay, it might be said that it's Belford's job to make saves and nobody argues with that.

What should be said though, is that it's a great reward for a player who's spent most of his Swindon career as a second string, first to Wes Foderingham and now Lawrence Vigouroux.

Sitting on the bench week after week looks a pretty soul destroying business. Week after week though, Belford is there willing to do his bit for the Town squad and is always happy to acknowledge the team's fans. So that's what made, not only the save, but the clean sheet so special.

The draw itself keeps Swindon on the fringes of the play off race. What happens over the next few days will go a long way to deciding whether the season finishes in early or late May.

At the moment it's an eight point gap between the Town and the top six. More importantly it's three games which Swindon have to win and their rivals have to lose if the campaign is to be extended.

It's often said that Easter is one of the most crucial phases of the footballing year, well that's upon us now. Having played the likes of Millwall who are above the County Ground team in the table, we meet another one on Good Friday.

A heartbreaking last minute goal deprived Swindon of a point at Wigan before Christmas. The same opposition are here for a tea time kick off in three days time. If there's a realistic chance of reaching that top six, then a win against the former FA Cup winners is essential.

Of course the fixture revives memories of that incredible cup tie a few years back, yes the last one that the Town won in the aforementioned oldest knock out competition.

You'll remember what happened. Wigan took the lead from the penalty spot, before Alan Connell's header equalised and Paul Benson diverted Matt Ritchie's shot into the then Premier League team's net.

A remarkable win because Swindon were in football's fourth tier. A wonderful gem and a wonderful atmosphere as Paolo Di Canio's men upset the apple cart. A repeat performance would be very welcome this Good Friday afternoon.
