Vic Morgan: March 15th, forever in the memory
Lifelong Robins fan Vic Morgan gives his authoritative say on everything Swindon Town, each Tuesday on Total Sport. This week Morgan reflects on the importance of this very day, March 15, in the history of Swindon Town Football Club.
Happy Ides of March! The date of the fifteenth of this particular month is always special to any Swindon Town supporter.
Memories of that day at Wembley Stadium is ingrained in the folklore of the club. I remember it as if was yesterday. The arrival at the Twin Towers, the sight of the disappointingly muddy pitch and the thought that my team were in a major cup final.
It goes without saying the victory over Arsenal will live with me forever and the shout of "Swindon, Swindon" still rings in my ears, not to mention the glorious Don Rogers run to clinch the victory. It was a day to treasure and recall over and over again.
Appropriate then, that we had another day to remember at the weekend. Apart from the first half, the game against Millwall was tremendous. Yes,I know the opening forty five minutes was a bit of a disaster, but the second half fight back and equalising goal right at the death was just sublime.
It shows the spirit in the current squad and the ability of head coach Luke Williams to spot a problem at half time and to change things.
One downside was the sight of a large temporary wall erected in the County Ground car park to keep the two sets of supporters apart. It was like going back to the bad old days of the Seventies and Eighties. Very depressing indeed.
On the positive side, remember that feeling at the final whistle. Just like all those years ago, a manager called Williams had seen his side achieve the improbable. Happy the 15th of March.
