Vic Morgan: What Can Swindon Town Achieve This Season?

Life-long Swindon Town fan Vic Morgan gives his authoritative say on the club, every week on Total Sport. This week Morgan takes a look at what is possible for the Robins for the remainder of the season.

There's no question this Swindon Town team has a never say die spirit. Another game, another fightback. In the City of steel Swindon showed their mettle and claimed a much deserved point against one of the fancied sides in League One.

Sheffield United had the best possible start with an early penalty, but from then on it's fair to say Swindon were the better team.

So what does this mean long term? Well it would be perhaps fanciful to say the play offs were a reality, wouldn't it? After all just a few short weeks ago relegation looked a more likely scenario.

No Town fan who was at Millwall earlier this season, could have foreseen the sort of performances we've seen of late. I'm not going over the top but I genuinely feel we could have a half decent finish to the campaign.

I certainly think a top ten place wouldn't be unrealistic. Beyond that? Who knows what this squad could achieve with one or two additions. Loan signing Michael Doughty had a more than reasonable debut and looks a very useful player in the midfield. There are some tricky games to come of course in the next few weeks.

On Saturday, bang in form Barnsley visit having hit six against Rochdale at the weekend. All I know is that after the dejection of early winter, there's a bit of a spring in the step of most Town fans right now.

The managerial situation is sorted and a bit of stability never did any harm. One thing is always guaranteed with our team and that's nothing is certain. The roller coaster is never still.

There's no doubt who the headline maker was over the weekend. Former Town marksman Charlie Austin made a dream debut for Southampton at Old Trafford. News of his goal reached the travelling Swindon fans as they made their way back to the supporters coaches after the draw at Bramall Lane.

There was much discussion as to why a player with the 'goal-den' touch cost a measly four million. As I wrote last week, it's hard to understand why many of the bigger clubs in the Premier League didn't take a punt on Charlie. What would Manchester United give for one of his goals now? Extraordinary that maybe they didn't think to take a look.

Finally, if you've reached a certain age and think that your footballing days are behind you, think again. The sport of Walking Football is growing in popularity. It was the half time entertainment at a recent Town match and gives those a bit longer in the tooth the chance to kick a football when maybe they'd thought that opportunity had gone.

I've been taking part in the sport for a few months now and it's hugely enjoyable. There are competitive tournaments now being organised and play is to a decent standard. A Swindon team won a Football League organised event at Exeter back in the summer. So if you think you still have the skills of Messi, Ronaldo or even Obika, then give Walking Football a try. It's inclusive and also gives the chance to those returning from ill health to get back to fitness. As the slogan says "Get Inspired".
