What positions do STFC still need to recruit for?

Richie Wellens has wasted little time addressing the areas that need improving within his squad as STFC push for promotion this upcoming season. And whilst Swindon Town have seen seven new signings come through the door at SN1 so far this summer, there is still work to be done in the market for Wellens and co. Total Sport Swindon's Rajan Hothi assesses the positions Swindon need to improve on in the remainder of the transfer window.

Goalkeeper

Following the unceremonious departure of Lawrence Vigouroux at the end of last season, Swindon are in desperate need of a quality goalkeeper to challenge Luke McCormick, who will be eager to cement himself as Town's number one for the forthcoming season.

And with Will Henry as well as Archie Matthews still in need to carry on their development, with the duo likely to be sent out on loan again, another shot-stopper is required to make sure Swindon have adequate options in between the sticks.

Shamal George and Nikolay Krastev have both been on trial so far at Town, with the pair making appearances against Brimscombe & Thrupp and Swindon Supermarine respectively, highlighting that Wellens is keen to bring in another shot-stopper.

Striker

Swindon’s measly accumulation of just 59 goals last season highlighted the lack of a proven goalscorer within the ranks of STFC. And now Wellens will need to address this problem in the window if Town are to have a chance of promotion this time around.

Jerry Yates has been the only forward to sign for the Reds this summer on a season-long loan from Rotherham United, but a more proven goalscorer should be on the agenda for Wellens.

Yates impressed while on loan at Carlisle United last season, but due to often being played out of position he was unable to showcase his goalscoring capabilities on a frequent basis.

Eoin Doyle is one man who has been heavily linked with a move to SN1, with the 31-year-old impressing in recent years at both Chesterfield and Oldham in League One.

However, Wellens has admitted that it's proving hard to sign a recognised goalscorer with Swindon missing out on Nicky Maynard's signature as the striker opted to sign for Mansfield. But if Swindon are to be competitive this season, a goalscorer is a necessity.

Attacking midfielder

Richie Wellens has expressed his desire to bring in a new number 10 to the club, and this will be another must with the only attacking midfielders being Michael Doughty and Keshi Anderson with the latter looking to be on his way out the club

Danny Mayor was reportedly a target for Town, but the former Bury man instead decided for a move to League Two rivals Plymouth Argyle. However, it shows that Wellens is aware that an attacking midfielder to unlock defences as well as contributing to goals is needed for the upcoming campaign as the Swindon Town looks to complete his team.

With the defence more or less sorted, Wellens is eager to add some creativity to his squad and a number 10 will likely be coming through the door between now and the end of the transfer window.
