Wildcats continue recruitment drive as Whitfield extends stay

Stevie Whitfield has become the latest Wildcat to sign a new contract and extend his stay in SN5. D-man Whitfield, one of the Wildcats' longest serving players, this week committed himself to another two years at the Link.

Whitfield joins Neil Liddiard, Jonas Hoog, Stevie Lyle and head coach Aaron Nell in continuing his stay in Wiltshire, as the Wildcats look ahead to a 2016/17 season will potential silverware in the offing.

The popular defenceman has been a mainstay for the Cats over the last five years having risen through the club’s Academy ranks, racking up over 250 appearances.

Whitfield formed a solid partnership alongside Lee Richardson in 2015/16, putting up 12 points in 54 outings for his boyhood club.

The 25-year-old has also become a firm fans’ favourite during his time in Wiltshire, making his decision to commit to another two years an “easy one.”

“I’m delighted to have signed for the club for another two years,” he said after putting pen to paper on his new deal.

“With some of the key players Aaron (Nell) has got on the books, I’m looking forward to getting back on the ice already.

“Last year was tough with all the turmoil during the first-half of the season, but we managed to finish relatively strong and we will look to take that in to next season.

“The support in Swindon is fantastic and that is a major reason why the decision for me to re-sign each year is an easy one.”

Whitfield’s exploits last term earned him the Supporters Club’s Defenceman of the Year Award at the End of Season Presentation Evening, and player-coach Aaron Nell was thrilled to have bolstered his defensive options further having already secured the return of veteran D-Man Neil Liddiard earlier this month.

“It is great that Stevie will be with us for two more seasons,” Nell said.

“He’s a massive part of our club and I believe he’s still got a lot more to give. He’s one of the hardest working players in the league and he has improved every year he’s played for the Wildcats.

“He’s another great person that I want in the dressing room and I’m delighted he’s going to be a big part of our future.”
