Swindon Wildcats Match Report 18/11/12
Manchester Phoenix 5 - 4 (AOT) Swindon Wildcats
The Swindon Wildcats rounded off their weekend on the road last Sunday, with what was another exciting spectacle of a high scoring game.
Despite losing out on a secondary point the previous evening, the 'Cats headed to Manchester in the hunt for two more important points against the Phoenix. However it would be the home side who would strike first, as Manchester's Pozivil scored in just under two minutes.
A one goal game was soon made two as the import then went about grabbing another shortly after, with a placed shot past netminder Dean Skinns. With ten minutes gone the Phoenix then made it three in succession, this time with forward Ciaran Long snapping the puck in the top corner after what was a quick release in on net.
Despite not opening the game well, Swindon had little to lose as they entered the second period and came out looking to have the initial impact. Although a Tom Duggan goal for the home side would find its way between the pads of Skinns, Swindon seemed little affected as they continued to battle on the road.
With momentum on their side and just the one goal behind, Swindon headed into the final period knowing the game was still in their grasp. After some superlative saves from Skinns in net, the Wildcats then found a tying goal and again through the hands of previous scorer Kapicka to collect his hat trick. A tied game bought its way into yet another overtime period for the 'Cats, with both sides facing off in the four on four OT situation.
A good start for Swindon would see them nearly win the game, however a big save from Fone in net denied that opportunity and kept the home sides' chances alive. Moments later and that game ending goal was then netted and at the hands of the home side. After a rush up the ice Phoenix's Luke Boothroyd would hit a rapid slapshot from inside the Swindon zone, beating a screen of players and with it a poised Skinns in net. A goal here would see an end to the game and give the Manchester Phoenix that second point and the Sunday night win.
The Swindon Wildcats will take two points from the weekend gone and move ahead with the Manchester Phoenix themselves visiting this coming Saturday on home ice. A final 5-4 game is sure to be the promise of another great fixture this weekend and one that will undoubtedly be fought hard for another two points.
