Williams Happy Steering The Ship While STFC Remain Managerless
Swindon Town acting first team manager Luke Williams insists he is happy to continue going about his work, while the powers that be above him come to a decision as to who is to fill the full-time managerial position at the club.
Williams, who has been in charge of the Robins for the previous two games, has overseen two victories and pocketed six points.
Two goal-laden home ties have seen Town hit eight while conceding five, moving up into fourteenth place in League One.
It's been far from simple for Williams during his first 180 minutes as acting manager, with a heroic comeback needed against Southend, while a last-gasp winner proved to be the decisive moment against Crewe Alexandra.
The Town hierarchy have already confirmed they are seeking to appoint a successor to the recently departed Martin Ling at the earliest convenience. But, two games in and no candidate any closer to being identified, Williams admits he is happy holding the fort and allowing decisions to be made if and when.
Discussing his current position during his post-match media duties after the victory over Crewe, Williams said.
“The chairman has been very supportive of me and seems to be very happy with my work as a coach so I think I will be at the football club one way or another in some capacity.
"If the chairman decides I am better off in a position as a coach and he wants to bring someone else in, there will be no sulking or lack of motivation from me. I will continue my work as a coach if that’s the case, and I will do it to the best of my ability.
"I’m not sure that you ever feel ready for your first job but, like I have said before, I have got total confidence in the chairman and if the chairman believes I am the right person for the club at this moment, then I will do my best every single day," Williams added.
Williams has been touted for the Town hot seat once before, following the departure of manager Mark Cooper earlier in the campaign.
With the club instead opting for former Town player and Leyton Orient boss Martin Ling, Williams continued his position as second in command, overseeing all training field activities at the club.
But now, with the head position vacant once more, many are questioning whether this time Williams will get the nod on a full time basis.
When asked whether he foresaw the offer of first team manager coming his way, Williams said: "I expect nothing. I expect to be told at some point when the chairman feels it is the right time that ‘this is going to be your future’"
Williams is again expected to lead the Robins for this Saturday's League One fixture against Sheffield United, where Swindon travel to South Yorkshire in hope of making it three wins in three.
