The Wiltshire-based club's run of straight defeats stretched to five on Tuesday night as an own goal from Lloyd Jones and a late John-Joe O'Toole effort either side of Luke Norris' header earned Northampton a 2-1 win at Sixfields.
Prior to kick-off, striker Jermaine Hylton left the ground after being told he was not in the matchday squad and Williams said the morale in the dressing room was low following the defeat.
"There's devastation - it's the aftermath of something terrible (that) has happened and we need to dust ourselves down and be ready to go again on Saturday (against Oldham)".
Despite this, however, Williams remains faithful that his young side can rally together and avoid the drop.
"You have to try, that's all you can do - it's irretrievable if you don't try that's for sure.
"If you don't push the players to be stronger people and to grow up and be men then of course it's impossible but we're not quitting and we don't want to stop pushing the players.
"We have (got enough men) if they step up. Time will tell (how big an if that is at the moment)."
