Swindon Town part company with head coach Luke Williams

Luke Williams has lost his job at Swindon Town, just 15 months into a five-year contract, following the club's relegation to League Two.

Williams has been the head coach of Swindon since January 2016, when he signed a five-year deal following six wins from ten as interim head coach, but since then Town have only managed 14 wins, and were relegated from League One this season.

The full record of Williams reads: played 75, won 20, drawn 22, and lost 33.

Prior to being the club's head coach, Williams as assistant to previous manager Mark Cooper and, in 2015, the pair guided Swindon to the League One play-off final at Wembley, but the Robins lost 4-0 to Preston.

Swindon failed to build on that in the following season, and flirted with relegation for the majority of the campaign, with Cooper losing his job in October.

After chairman Lee Power had an interim spell as manager, Swindon legend Martin Ling was appointed as Cooper's successor, but had to leave the club after an unwelcome return of his depression. Williams got the top job soon after.

Swindon won their first game of the 2016-17 season, but struggled for consistentsy throughout the year and, in November of 2016, appointed Tim Sherwood as a director of football.

Sherwood took control of tactics, transfers and team selection, but relinquished those duties prior to the home loss against Oxford, which Williams took the reigns for again.

When back in charge, Williams was unable to steer Swindon clear of relegation and, next season, they will be in League Two for the first time in six years.

In a statement, Swindon Town Football Club said: "Swindon Town can confirm that Luke Williams has left his position as Head Coach of the Football Club with immediate effect.

"Following our relegation to the Sky Bet League Two, reviews have taken place and, as a result, the football club and Luke Williams have mutually agreed to go their separate ways.

"We would like to wish Luke the very best of luck for the future.

"The club would also like to confirm that the search for a new candidate to take the club forward is well underway and we will issue a further update in due course."

There has been no indication yet on who will replace Williams as the club's manager.
