LEADING CANCER CONSULTANT TO RUN SECOND LONDON MARATHON FOR CANCER RESEARCH UK
Dr Hugo De La Peña, one of UK’s leading breast cancer consultants will participate in the London Marathon for the second time, running in support of Cancer Research UK.
Dr Hugo has worked as a cancer consultant for the NHS for over five years and has been actively supporting cancer charities throughout his medical and scientific career.
In 2022 he became an ambassador for Cancer Research UK, where he promotes the importance of clinical trials because they change the current best practice and improve cancer cure and survival rates with kinder and more precise treatments. He has personally raised substantial funds and has been invited to take part in the charity's TV advertisement campaigns in 2022, 2023, and 2024.
On the 21st April 2024, Dr. Hugo will once again run the London Marathon, aiming to raise crucial funds for Cancer Research UK. Reflecting on his achievement last year, when he completed the marathon for the first time. Dr Hugo expressed his determination for the upcoming event:
“The London Marathon in 2023 was magical, a victory lap on behalf of my patients. Emotional without description thinking about the patients I have lost and the determination to win as many battles as possible and I’m running again with those patients in my mind.”
Cancer Research UK is the world's leading cancer charity dedicated to saving lives through research. Their pioneering work has led to significant breakthroughs in cancer treatment, diagnosis and prevention. Funds raised through events like the London Marathon enable the organisation to continue their vital research efforts and support those affected by cancer.
Dr Hugo said: “We should always aim to cure cancer, but if we can’t, then we need treatments to convert cancer into a chronic disease rather than a life limiting one. Cancer affects 1 in 2 of us, so we either bury our heads in the sand or we tackle it.
“I said I would only run the London Marathon once, but the cause is simply bigger than me, we cure cancer most days, but not every day and so here we go again until we do.”
